How to select an area rug!

There is a rich history of area rugs. Area rugs and various construction techniques have spread throughout the world. Persian and Oriental rugs have been widely produced and used in Asia and the Middle East for centuries. Due to the high demand and price, they were available to average European and American households. With the relatively recent production of manmade carpets and area rugs using synthetic and natural materials, area rugs are available to fit any budget. Hand tied rugs have always been considered valuable and a great investment. However, the techniques used to create machine made rugs make a good alternative.

• Natural Fiber

Natural fiber area rugs are made from natural fibers like jute, sea grass, sisal, and bamboo. They can be used indoors and outdoors. They are not suitable for high traffic areas due to the fact that they don’t clean very easily. Since they are made from natural fibers, they are great for the environment.  

• Persian Rugs

Persian rugs originate from Iran. This skill of carpet weaving was handed down from generations dating back to 2,500 years ago. They are well known for there rich colors, variety of artistic patterns, and quality of design. Persian rugs are usually made of wool and silk. They are very sturdy and make a great family heirloom.    

• Woven Patterned Rugs

Woven patterned rugs are an affordable way to freshen up your space. They come in many contemporary patterns that evoke a lot of color. There are many designer rugs to choose from. The designs range from contemporary, modern, to traditional. The selection of designer rugs are so great, the possibilities are endless.   Choose an area rug that fits your space. Also consider the amount of traffic a space received in addition to the shape, size, and color of the area rug.
