Need advice getting my carpets clean!!!?
I have a room in my house that was an addition. We use it as a play room for my kids but every time they play down there they come up with black feet. As far as I know the carpet was layed on bare concrete. I have tried multiple times to shampoo it and every time the water comes up dirtier than the last time. And it still turns the soles of our feet black. I have a very nice and new Rug Dr. Is there anything I can add to the solution or spray on the floor to help get it clean? Thanks
Going out on a limb, it sounds to me like you have a cleaning residue problem with the carpet in the playroom. Unless you do a final rinse pass or two over the carpets with either a neutralizing rinse or fresh water w/ a 10% ratio of distilled white vinegar, the cleaning solution you use to clean the carpets will accumulate over time ( you may notice that the carpets need to be cleaned progressively more often ). As your kids run and play, the moisture on the bottom of their socks allows some of the residual cleaning solution to transfer to them. As they continue to play, their socks become little super Swiffers collecting any dust particles they happen across.
One easy way to check if this is the cause, is to take a damp terry cloth towel and gently “rake” the carpet fibers in the portion of the playroom where they spend the most time. If with one or two strokes the towel is noticeably soiled, its likely a residue issue.
This is a very common problem with not only home use carpet extractors, but unfortunately with “professional” carpet cleaning companies as well. With 17 years in the carpet restoration business, I get to see this all too often! http://www.benchmarkrestores.com
Happy trails.

Tips for Designing the Ideal Kids Play Room
If it is feasible for your family, house layout & budget, providing you child with a playroom makes great sense. Designated playrooms are great for kids because they have a place to congregate and have a fun time while playing within the boundaries of the house. As a parent, you will love that toys are kept in one part of the home making the rest of it clutter free. Having toys in a designed spot helps to reduce stress especially for the children. With so many options available for creating an excellent playroom, your children are certain to enjoy their playtime. To achieve success in creating this space, you first need to plan. Pick the room and then assess the needs of that spot. It helps to create a list of wants and needs, and then stick to it. Shopping for children’s furniture is fun because there are many different designs available. However, it is wise to first prepare the room before your buy furniture.
Flooring – For example, if the flooring is hardwood, do you want a play rug for the floor? If you have existing carpeting, what is the condition of it? Does it need cleaning, replacing or is it fine just way it is? Also, if you decide to replace the current carpet, make sure that you take the option of having a protective coating applied to the carpet like “scotch-guard,” which will protect it from stains. Kids play carpets are not just for the classroom any longer as they are readily available for home use. This is an investment that will pay for itself with the first spill. Play carpets are about learning and playing due the educational designs available. Look for award winning play carpets that are durable and adhere to the strictest safety standards. For example, play carpets should have a skid-proof backing and the rugs should be stain-resistant and washable. Buy play carpets with the highest non-flammability rating you can find and make sure it meets the ASTM F963 guidelines for safety. Another key point for consideration is making sure this product is non-toxic and non-allergenic.
Safety – Make the room is a safe play zone. This means you should childproof the room so it is age appropriate. If you need outlet covers or window latches, add it to the list. Make sure large furniture is bolted to the wall so it doesn’t tip over. Make sure the window treatments are safe, without hanging cords or pulls that pose a strangling hazard. Use good judgment when your children’s safety is at stake. Our last recommendation of things to do when you are ready to furnish the playroom is look for children’s furniture that is made with safety in mind. For example, the toy box should have built in features like safety hinges on the lid which protect little fingers from getting pinched.
Wall – Does the room need a new coat of paint? If so, look for paint that is washable, lead free and safe for children. A new coat of paint will dramatically improve the appearance of a room. Wallpaper has been around for decades but new to the market is wall decals and these are perfect for playroom décor. They are easy to attach to the wall and are removable without leaving marks.
What you decide to accomplish before the playroom is ready will make it that much more special for the kids. By doing a few easy things from the start, you will be much more pleased with the finished project. While there are so many creative ways to make the ideal playroom, planning and achieving the results you want will be an easy task as long as you take the time to prepare. In summary, there many viable options, styles, designs you can consider when preparing a room for play and planning makes all the difference.
